(Keep reading and I will teach you a secret to success by reversing the Do, Have, Be cycle)
Academy Award® winners are people at the top of their game — receiving an award for being the best. I couldn’t help but notice that these were indeed world-class expressions of appreciation. Some seemed surprised and unprepared, but nevertheless they all knew who to thank for helping them get to the top. These are world-class people giving credit in a very public forum. What about you?
Is appreciation over-rated?
You already know this stuff. So, why am I writing about it? Appreciation runs the full spectrum from small to large. Often it seems that we reserve appreciation for the big things. As a person building a business, I’m sure you can appreciate the big things like an investor writing you a check, or a company signing your sales contract. But to get there, many little things have come together as well. As you have heard, “God is in the details” and that can be the part that drives us crazy. Some things work and some things don’t. Sometimes we can spend too much time dwelling on the things that don’t work and find ourselves in some kind of tailspin that completely distracts us from what we need to be doing now.
I discovered that the most healthy way out of this is to look around and to acknowledge everything that is working for me. I start with something basic, obvious, and simple like my feet. I can walk. I can see this screen, I have a nice place to live. I drive a nice car, I have lots of cool friends and I’m in decent physical condition so I can do almost anything almost anywhere. I’ve amassed a tremendous amount of experience, knowledge, and wisdom over the years… Now,what was I complaining about? It doesn’t take very long to drown out the negativity and stop the tailspin. Appreciate the little things, because without them you have plenty of other problems!
Remember Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs.” Your problem now is that you’ve satisfied your most recent desires, and you are on to the next one. (You have actually transitioned to a place of lack.) Instead, can you dwell on your recent accomplishments a little longer? Celebrate and savor your success. Remember what you already have and have already accomplished. From this place of success you are in the best position to attract more success!
You must first be successful in order to have success.
The Do, Have, Be cycle must be reversed to run properly -> Be, Do, Have. You must first be successful in order to have success. You are not a human doing, but a human being. Therefore, how we be is most important. Practicing appreciation is the easiest technique for tuning your mind. Appreciate your wealth — in its various forms — and you are being wealthy. Appreciation puts you in / returns you to the “be” place of having wealth and success. Now that you are successful and wealthy, you can have more success and wealth. It’s who you are. Who you are being is attractive to more.
Appreciating all of the small as well as large things, will do wonders for maintaining a healthy motivation along the way to seeing your business through to accomplishing your vision. Practice this for a while… and appreciate what happens! (Watch for my blog on “practicing”)
